Corona 50 SP '54

Corona 50 SP '54

Quick Overview

There is no mistaking a '54.
The first year's production utilised pickup covers made by vacuum forming rather than plastic moulding, hence the larger edge radius which, when aged and played, exhibited the tendency to split and wear away, thereby exposing the coil windings beneath. As with all things 'vintage', it is this kind of 'fault and wear' or 'patina', as the antique collector market calls it, that really makes these guitars cool and desirable.

P90s were with us two years earlier, but not with the same company - what a pity, as adding one of these in the bridge pickup position makes the Corona 50 SP '54' truly usable for today's players.

Original 50s one-piece maple necks were a leftover from the original 'no truss rod' design, hence their extra girth and mass - no doubt adding to the resonance and 'ring' of this style of guitar.

Modern-vintage or vintage-modern, you decide.
